Moving from prototypes to GT-class racing during the early 1970s, Porsche successfully redirected its considerable development efforts to the 911, which had already enjoyed significant success in nearly all forms of motorsport. While the words “iconic” or “legendary” may be overused today in reference to various sports cars, it’s truly impossible to overstate the enormous impact made by Porsche’s brilliant 930 Turbo. Originally conceived to meet the FIA homologation requirements for Group 4 (GT) and Group 5 (World Championship) sports car racing, development continued unabated as the rules changed. The new car was repositioned as a fully equipped road model to lead the 911 series and compete directly with Italian rivals Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati. Ernst Fuhrmann led development, adapting technology developed for the ubiquitous 917/30 Can-Am to the Carrera RS 3.0’s 3.0-liter flat-six engine, with a KKK (Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch) turbocharger at its heart, as well as refinements to the suspension, larger brakes, and an uprated four-speed manual transmission. A functional whaletail rear spoiler increased cooling airflow to the rear-mounted engine and provided aerodynamic downforce. Wider rear wheels with updated tires sat within flared wheel wells, increasing grip and stability at speed. Designated Type 930, but commonly known simply as the Turbo, the new vehicle went on sale in the spring of 1975, and exports to the United States began in 1976. In 1978, power output reached 300 hp thanks to an increase in displacement to 3.3 liters and the addition of an air-to-air intercooler, as well as a myriad of detail improvements. Porsche’s careful and relentless development program also ensured that the 930 was a solid foundation for racing vehicles, and led to the great success of the 934 and 935 race cars, which dominated all major endurance races for years. On the road, the 930 proved fast but demanding; however, experienced drivers quickly learned to drive the 930 properly and push it far beyond the limits of most other sports cars. This particular car, delivered new in Munich, Germany, in 1988, in the attractive Diamond Blue color, with various options such as a sunroof, soft-look leather interior, and a larger battery, was subsequently registered in Padua, Italy, in 1991 and traveled just 100,000 km until it was laid up in the mid-1990s. In late 2015, the previous owner purchased it and carried out a complete restoration, spending over €50,000 on parts and work to bring the car back to like-new condition. Today, it presents itself in a stunning and original Diamond Blue Metallic paint with original light gray soft-look leather upholstery. It has just over 120,000 km on the odometer, and to this day, the engine is original with matching numbers.
