The 1935 Fiat 508S Berlinetta MM Aerodinamica is one of the most fascinating small-displacement Italian sports cars of the pre-war period. Created around the competition-oriented Fiat 508S platform, it combined a tuned 995 cc engine with a streamlined closed body conceived for long-distance events such as the Mille Miglia.

This particular 1935 Fiat 508S has been sold and is now preserved in the Giro Classico handled-car archive. The current page does not publish chassis-specific history or technical details, so the information below deliberately focuses on the 508S Berlinetta Mille Miglia model rather than attributing undocumented competition history to this individual car.

The aerodynamic Fiat built for competition

The ordinary Fiat 508 Balilla was conceived as an affordable small car, but the 508S Sport developed the platform in a very different direction.

By 1934 the sporting version had gained an overhead-valve engine, four-speed gearbox and approximately 36 hp from just 995 cc. For 1935 Fiat went a step further, creating a two-seat closed competition car generally known as the 508S Berlinetta Aerodinamica, 508 CS Berlinetta MM or simply Berlinetta Mille Miglia.

The idea was clever: retain the compact mechanical package of the successful Spider Sport while giving drivers better protection during long, demanding road races.

Its specification was remarkably purposeful for a one-litre car:

  • 995 cc four-cylinder OHV engine
  • approximately 36 hp
  • four-speed manual gearbox
  • rear-wheel drive
  • lightweight two-seat berlinetta body
  • mechanical drum brakes
  • wire wheels
  • compact 2,250 mm wheelbase

Period technical references quote a top speed of around 110 km/h, impressive performance from such modest displacement in the mid-1930s.

Mario Revelli di Beaumont and an unmistakable shape

The real attraction of the Berlinetta MM is its body.

The aerodynamic form is attributed to Mario Revelli di Beaumont, while production was handled by Fiat’s own specialist coachbuilding department, Carrozzerie Speciali Fiat.

Its rounded nose, enclosed cockpit and flowing fastback tail were radically different from the upright proportions of ordinary small cars of the period.

Today that shape is more than visually attractive. It captures a moment when aerodynamics was becoming an increasingly important part of competition-car design, even among cars with engines of less than one litre.

The Berlinetta therefore has several layers of collector appeal at once: pre-war Fiat engineering, aerodynamic design, coachbuilt rarity and Mille Miglia-era competition heritage.

From the 508S Coppa d’Oro to the Berlinetta Mille Miglia

The Berlinetta shared its mechanical roots with the famous 508S Spider Sport, commonly known as the Coppa d’Oro.

The lightweight Spider had proved extremely effective in small-displacement competition. Fiat’s closed Berlinetta was intended to offer greater protection from weather during events such as the Mille Miglia, but its more elaborate body added weight.

Historical accounts therefore describe an interesting trade-off: the Berlinetta was more aerodynamic and comfortable, but generally less competitive than the lighter Spider.

That did not prevent the model from achieving meaningful results. A documented 508S Berlinetta finished 14th overall and second in class at the 1936 Mille Miglia, demonstrating just how capable a carefully prepared one-litre Fiat could be over one of Europe’s toughest road races.

This result belongs to a documented individual chassis and should not automatically be attributed to the Giro Classico car.

Why the 508S Berlinetta is important today

The appeal of the Fiat 508S Berlinetta is very different from that of a large-engine Alfa Romeo, Bugatti or Bentley.

Its importance comes from doing more with less.

A small engine, low weight and efficient body produced a car that could compete seriously over enormous distances. That philosophy became fundamental to Italian sports-car engineering and later appeared in cars from Cisitalia, SIATA, Stanguellini, Abarth and many other specialist manufacturers.

The 508S also offers a compelling combination for today’s collector:

  • genuine pre-war engineering
  • strong Fiat competition heritage
  • exceptional visual identity
  • very low production
  • small-displacement mechanical simplicity
  • direct association with the Mille Miglia era

One specialist historical source reports that only eleven Berlinetta Aerodinamica examples were produced, although exact totals should be treated carefully because surviving records and terminology can differ between sources.

For valuation purposes, the exact chassis and its individual history therefore matter far more than any generic production figure.

A car to buy through documentation, not appearance alone

With a rare pre-war competition car, provenance is fundamental.

Before purchasing a Fiat 508S Berlinetta MM, a specialist should establish:

  • chassis identity
  • engine type and number
  • body identity
  • period photographs
  • registration history
  • competition history
  • restoration documentation
  • originality of chassis and coachwork
  • period-correct mechanical specification

The model used the Fiat Type 108CS 995 cc engine, but individual cars may have been modified during their competition lives or restored decades later.

For that reason, a beautifully presented car should never be assumed to retain its original configuration without documentary and physical verification.

On this kind of vehicle, historical continuity is often more valuable than cosmetic perfection.

Mille Miglia relevance

The Berlinetta was conceived precisely within the world of long-distance Italian road racing, making the Mille Miglia connection central to its identity.

However, there is an important distinction between a model having period Mille Miglia history and a particular surviving chassis being automatically accepted for the modern event.

Eligibility should always be verified using:

  • exact chassis number
  • production date
  • historical documentation
  • recognised model classification
  • current 1000 Miglia regulations

This matters especially here because Giro Classico has archived related Fiat 508S Berlinetta pages under different years. The current page is clearly indexed as 1935, and I would retain that year unless documentary evidence for this exact chassis proves otherwise.

This 1935 Fiat 508S Berlinetta MM has been sold

This specific 1935 Fiat 508S Berlinetta MM Aerodinamica is no longer available. The current Giro Classico page confirms its SOLD status and invites collectors searching for a similar vehicle to make an enquiry.

Keeping the page online is particularly valuable because it can answer high-quality searches around:

  • Fiat 508S for sale
  • Fiat 508S Berlinetta Mille Miglia
  • Fiat 508 CS Berlinetta
  • pre-war Fiat sports car
  • Mille Miglia eligible cars
  • Fiat Balilla Sport
  • rare Italian racing cars

A collector arriving through one of these searches is unlikely to be looking for an ordinary vintage Fiat. The commercial intent is much closer to rare-event cars, historically significant competition vehicles and specialist private sourcing.

Looking for a Mille Miglia-era sports car currently available?

There is no direct Fiat 508S Berlinetta in the current Giro Classico inventory.

For a collector whose priority is an important lightweight historic sports car with strong event appeal, the most relevant current route is the 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A 1500 Speedster.

The Porsche is twenty years younger and mechanically very different, so it should not be presented as a substitute for the Fiat. What connects them is the collector intent: light weight, modest displacement, competition-inspired engineering and eligibility potential for major international historic events.

For someone who specifically wants a pre-war Fiat 508S, however, a targeted private search is the better solution.

Looking specifically for a Fiat 508S or another pre-war Italian sports car?

Cars of this rarity often change hands privately, and a successful acquisition depends as much on provenance as on finding an available example.

Giro Classico can assist with the search for:

  • Fiat 508S Berlinetta MM Aerodinamica
  • Fiat 508S Coppa d’Oro
  • Fiat 508 CS competition cars
  • SIATA
  • Cisitalia
  • Stanguellini
  • early Lancia competition cars
  • other Mille Miglia-era Italian sports cars
